US Army M109A6 Paladin 155mm Self-propelled Howitzer




The M109 is an American 155 mm turreted self-propelled howitzer, first introduced in the early 1960s. It has been upgraded a number of times, most recently to the M109A7

The M109 has a crew of four: the section chief/commander, the driver, the gunner, and the ammunition handler/loader. The chief or gunner aims the cannon left or right (deflection) and up and down (quadrant).

With the cancellation of the U.S. Crusader and Non-Line-of-Sight Cannon, the M109A6 ("Paladin") will remain the principal self-propelled howitzer for the U.S. for the foreseeable future until the new M1299 will enter service.

US - Excalibur Guided Round

The Excalibur is a GPS guided round that can be fired from a number of artillery platforms including the M109 Paladin. With a Circular Error Probability of a mere 32.8 ft, the Excalibur offers extreme accuracy.

The Excalibur projectile is a true precision weapon, impacting at a radial miss distance of less than two meters from the target. Unlike “near precision” guidance systems, the Excalibur weapon provides accurate first-round effects at all ranges in all weather conditions. This weapon system also extends the reach of .39-caliber artillery to 40 km and .52-caliber artillery to more than 50 km.

By using the Excalibur projectile's level of precision, there is a dramatic reduction in the time, cost and logistical burden associated with other artillery munitions. Analyses have shown that on average, it can take at least 10 conventional munitions to accomplish what one Excalibur weapon can.

The Excalibur munition is compatible with every howitzer with which it’s been tested. This weapon is fully qualified in multiple systems, including the M777, M109 series, M198, the Archer and PzH2000. It’s also compatible with the AS90, K9 and G6 howitzers. Plans are underway to integrate it with other mobile artillery systems.
The Excalibur projectile’s precision, coupled with its ability to be integrated on multiple gun systems, enables both the U.S. and its coalition partners to provide overmatch capabilities against land targets in a variety of combat environments. This includes stationary land targets.

 M109A6 Paladins Artillery Fires in Action, Paladin M109A6 is a cannon artillery gadget developed by the Ground System Division of United Defense LP (now BAE Systems Land and Armaments) and manufactured at the Paladin Production Operation centre at Chambersburg, Pennsylvania.

Paladin was first fielded in 1994 and is operational with the United States Army and the Israeli Army, and has been selected by using the Kuwait and Taiwan.

In June 1999, the US Army received the closing of 950 Paladin M109A6 ordered. Seven systems have been ordered in July 2000 for the US Army National Guard and a further 18 systems in January 2002.

Paladin artillery gadget operation
The Paladin artillery system is operated with the aid of a crew of four, a commander, driver, gunner and loader. Paladin is able to operate independently with no external technical assistance. The crew are able to acquire mission facts with the aid of a impervious voice and digital communications system, compute the firing data, routinely unencumber the cannon from the travel lock, factor the cannon and fire, and go to a new area barring external technical assistance. Paladin M109A6 fires the first round from the move in beneath 60 seconds. The ‘shoot and scoot’ capability protects the crew from the counterbattery fire.

Paladin was once used in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in March / April 2003 and in the continuing operations in Iraq, such as Operation Al Fajr in Fallujah in November 2004.

BAE Systems Land and Armaments supplied 219 modification kits for US Army Paladins which enable the use of the modular artillery cost machine (MACS) and the 155mm precision-guided extended-range XM92 Excalibur projectile being developed by using Raytheon and Bofors Defense of Sweden (a BAE Systems subsidiary). Deliveries began in 2005.
