Russia - TOS-1 Buratino MLRS

The TOS-1 Buratino is a unique Russian self-propelled multiple rocket launcher system (MRLS) that has seen action in global hotspots like Afghanistan, Chechnya, Iraq and Syria. Like the enormous 240-millimeter 2S4 self-propelled mortar, the TOS-1’s specialty is obliterating heavily fortified positions. Although some of these may be found in rural rebel strongholds and fortified caves, they have often been employed in heavily urbanized environments. It’s gained a uniquely nasty reputation because of the horrifying effects of its fuel-air explosive warheads. To put it concisely, these are amongst the most devastating explosive weapons short of tactical nuclear weapons.

TOS stands for “heavy flame thrower,” which is only accurate in a literal sense: instead of projecting a stream of jellied gasoline, the TOS-1 launches a rocket carrying a fuel-air explosive (FAE).These were first employed by the United States in the Vietnam War because napalm wasn’t destructive enough. Napalm munitions disperse a sticky, flaming liquid over a wide area. By contrast, a fuel-air explosive detonates the very air itself: a small explosive inside the FAE munition spreads a chemical cloud in the air through an aerosol effect. The gaseous cloud seeps effortlessly into buildings and caves, and down into slit trenches. A secondary explosive then ignites the cloud, causing a massive and long-lasting explosion. While the heat generated by FAEs causes lethal burns in a wide radius (roughly two hundred by three hundred meters) the overpressure created by the sudden combustion of the air is even deadlier. The fiery blasts create a partial oxygen vacuum that kills and maims in a variety of grotesque ways and cannot be mitigated with body armor or hard cover.

South Africa - G6-52 155mm gun-howitzer

The G6-52 is a 155mm 6x6 wheeled self propelled gun-howitzer developed by South Africa. It entered service with the South African National Defence force in 2003.  It is a development of the G6-Rhino, with a new 52 calibre gun replacing the original 45 calibre gun. 

 The G6-52 fires NATO compatible ammunition to a range of 30km using standard projectile, and 39kk with rocket assisted. It can carry 48 rounds in the turret. 

The gun operates a semi-automatic loading system which can fire 8 rounds per minute and has the capability for multiple round simultaneous impact firing. It can fire its first round within 60 secs of deployment, with an out of action time of 30 secs, providing a shoot and scoot capability. 

The detachment of five consists of a commander, gunner, two loaders and a driver.

Cyprus - Nora Alexander TGS

In the presence of the Minister of Defence, Mr. Charalambos Petridis, the Chief of the National Guard Lieutenant-General Democritus Zervakis and the Serbian Ambassador to Cyprus Marko Blagojevic, the first shot of the 2nd squadron of self-propelled guns Nora Alexander TGS took place at the Kitio firing range.

The procurement of this weapons system is part of the multi-annual plan to upgrade and modernise the National Guard. With the inclusion of the 2nd Squadron Nora Alexander TGS, the capabilities of artillery are significantly upgraded. 

The Nora Alexander TGS weapon system is of Serbian construction and origin and consists of 155mm self-propelled guns. Nora-B52KE type, Milosh armored vehicles and observation systems.

South Korea - K9 155mm SP

South Korea designed the K9 to operate on the rugged mountains of the demilitarized zone with North Korea, and accordingly gave it advanced hydropneumatics suspension to overcome the rocky terrain. Despite weighing more than the U.S.-built M109 Paladin, which has been in widespread use across the globe since the 1960s, the K9 is faster (at forty-one miles per hour), has a higher power-to-weight ratio thanks to its thousand-horsepower engine, and has a nearly 40 percent greater operational range of three hundred miles before requiring refuelling. While the gun isn’t stable enough to be fired on the move, it can be deployed for firing in just one minute.

UK - Special Observers

The role of special observer is unique. Their job is to march up to 100km ahead of the frontline - deep into enemy territory and in the dead of night construct observation posts in buildings, bushes or underground. Then they must watch and wait, silently logging the enemy’s every move and feeding it back to command. The information they send will be crucial.


4/73 (Sphinx) Special Observation Post Battery RA

4/73 Battery comprises a Battery Headquarters and four Patrols Troops. It has a strength of six officers and 58 other ranks. Three troops, each of a 3-man Headquarters and two 6-man Patrols provide support to the brigades of 3rd Mechanised Division and others. One troop of a 3-man Headquarters and one 6-man Patrol at high readiness to support 16 Air Assault Brigade.

Special Observers give commanders the ability to deploy a specialist force element at range, in proximity to the enemy and in all weathers, to locate and prosecute targets as required. Working as the ISTAR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance) group in each of the brigades, the STA Patrols Troop are subject matter experts on Static Covert Surveillance (SCS) and complement the reconnaissance activity conducted by other Ground Manned Reconnaissance (GMR) forces in the Brigade.



The skill set includes:

  • manned observation post (OPs)
  • real time transmission of information
  • comprehensive technical surveillance, through use of: long lens optics, cameras and data transfer systems, to provide imagery of evidential quality
  • deployment of Long Range Electro Optical (LREO) systems: covert remote cameras and sensors
  • initiation of the full spectrum of joint fires
  • conduct of battle damage assessment (BDA)
  • trained in Survive, Evade, Resist, Extract (SERE)

 This New Weapons System Turns U.S. Army Artillery Into a 'Sniper Rifle'

The Joint Effects Targeting System significantly improves precision targeting. The M777 Lightweight 155mm howitzer provides timely, accurate and continuous firepower in support of Marine and Army infantry forces and replaces the M198 towed Howitzer. In 2005, the Army and Marine Corps began fielding the M777, a much smaller, lighter (9,000 pounds lighter) and more maneuverable towed cannon weapon than its predecessor, resulting in improved transportability and mobility without impacting range or accuracy. Seven-ton trucks are used to move the M777s, enabling artillery units to move faster between positions. A must for equipment in an expeditionary force, the howitzer is also highly deployable, able to be lifted externally by both the MV-22 Osprey and CH-53E Super Stallion and a single CH-47 Chinook.

Russia - 9K22 Tunguska - Self Propelled Anti Aircraft Artillery

The 2S6 Tunguska (Western reporting name SA-19 or Grison) is a Russian low-level air-defense system. Also known as 2K22M1, 2S6M, 9K22, SA-19 Grison and Tunguska-M1, was developed to replace the ZSU-23-4 Shilka self-propelled anti-aircraft gun and 9K31 Strela-1 and Strela-1M2 mobile surface-to-air missile systems. The ZSU-23-4 had no early warning and struggled to counter new ground attack aircraft, such as the US A-10 Thunderbolt II.

The original Tunguska was fitted with 9M311 missiles. These have a semi-active radar guidance and blast fragmentation warhead. There is a laser proximity fuse which triggers the warhead once the missile is near its. These missiles can engage targets traveling at speeds up to 500 m/s. Maximum altitude is only 3.5 km, while maximum range is 8 km. The 9M311 missiles are effective against low-flying aircraft and helicopters. These have a hit probability of 65%, while hit probability with guns is 80%. The 9M311-1 is a downgraded export version of the missile. The Tunguska is able to fire its guns on the move, however it must be stationary to fire missiles. The Tunguska typically launches its missiles when the target is at longer ranges, and uses guns at shorter ranges. Radar detection range of the original Tunguska is 17-18 km and tracking range is 11-16 km. Since its introduction no less than four different variants of search radars were used. Armor of the Tunguska protects the crew against small arms fire and artillery shell splinters. Though it will not withstand heavy machine gun fire. Vehicle is fitted with automatic fire suppression and NBC protection systems.

Powered by a version of the V-46 diesel, a multi-fuel engine, developing 780 hp. Vehicle has a hydropneumatic suspension with adjustable ground clearance, fitted with auxiliary gas turbine power unit, which powers all systems when the main engine is shut down. Battery of Tunguskas includes six 2S6 combat vehicles, six reloading vehicles, and five various technical assistance vehicles, including repair and maintenance vehicles, mobile workshop and missile test vehicles. A battery of Tunguskas can automatically receive fire control information from Ranzhir mobile command center.The dual 2A38 30 mm cannons and the later 2A38M were designed by the KBP Instrument Design Bureau and manufactured by the Tulamashzavod Joint Stock Company. The cannons are fired alternatively with a combined rate of fire of between 3,900 and 5,000 rounds per minute (1,950 to 2,500 rpm for each gun), and have a muzzle velocity of 960 m/s. Bursts of between 83 and 250 rounds are fired as determined by the target type, with an engagement range between 0.2 and 4.0 km and to an altitude of 4 km. UK - GMLRS 101 Regiment Royal Artillery

For the first time in 15 years Reservists from the 101st Northumbrian Regiment Royal Artillery, have fired the Multiple Launch Rocket System at Kirkcudbright Ranges in Dumfries and Galloway.  

The MLRS is the British Army’s main ‘precision fire’ weapon system, able to engage targets at long ranges with extreme accuracy. Each battery has its own reconnaissance and command sections which control the MLRS movement and firing, as well as the delivery of ammunition. The 3 man MLRS detachment will often operate and move independently, as will the other elements of the of the battery, such as the 2 man ammunition crew.

The BM-30 Smerch (Russian: Смерч, "tornado", "whirlwind"), 9K58 Smerch or 9A52-2 Smerch-M is a Soviet heavy multiple rocket launcher. The system is intended to defeat personnel, armored, and soft targets in concentration areas, artillery batteries, command posts and ammunition depots. It was designed in the early 1980s and entered service in the Soviet Army in 1989. When first observed by the West in 1983, it received the code MRL 280mm M1983. It continued in use by Russia; a program to replace it by the 9A52-4 Tornado was launched in 2018

BM21 - Grad The BM-21 "Grad" (Russian: БМ-21 "Град", lit. 'hail') is a Soviet truck-mounted 122 mm multiple rocket launcher. The weapons system and the M-21OF rocket[11] were first developed in the early 1960s, and saw their first combat use in March 1969 during the Sino-Soviet border conflict. BM stands for boyevaya mashina (Russian: боевая машина – combat vehicle), and the nickname grad means "hail". The complete system with the BM-21 launch vehicle and the M-21OF rocket is designated[by whom?] as the M-21 field-rocket system. The complete system is more commonly known as a Grad multiple rocket launcher system. In NATO countries the system (either the complete system or the launch vehicle only) was initially known as M1964. Several other countries have copied the Grad or have developed similar systems.

9A52-4 Tornado The 9A52-4 Tornado is Russia's newest universal multiple rocket launcher. It was designed as a lightweight and universal version of the BM-30 Smerch, dubbed 9A52-2. It was first unveiled in 2007 as a more strategically and tactically mobile launcher, albeit at the expense of a slight reduction in firepower. This model is aimed at replacing the previous generation of Russian multiple rocket launchers, including BM-21 Grad, BM-27 Uragan and BM-30 Smerch. Currently the sole operator is Russian Ground Forces. A version will be approved for export.
